Do You Want Higher Electric Bills?

    _000004633651bright1-200x300

    • By 2018 Progress Energy could add more than $40 a month to your bill to pay for two new risky nuclear reactors in Levy County before they ever produce any electricity, even if they are never built.
    • Florida Power & Light (FPL) also wants you to pay now for two new reactors at their Turkey Point plant near Miami, FL.

    How Did This Happen?

    • Florida’s Legislature gave power companies direct access to your wallet with minimal accountability when they passed Senate Bill 888 in 2006. And then the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) gave approval to the utilities to charge you in advance for hundreds of millions of dollars for these costly new reactors. Now the utilities are knocking on the PSC’s door again.
    • In the 2009 legislative session, the utilities wanted to change Florida’s path from renewable energy to “alternative energy” so they could include nuclear power and sidestep Governor Crist’s Executive Order to increase Florida’s renewable portfolio to 20%.

    Take Action!

    • We have all watched in horror over the last several months, as the BP oil disaster has plagued and devastated the beautiful and bountiful Gulf of Mexico. It has become painfully obvious that the high risk energy industry and their regulators will continue to put profit over people and the environment. With evidence that the yet-to-be-certified Westinghouse AP 1000 reactor design proposed by Progress and FPL for here in Florida is flawed, how can we, the ratepayers, allow the utilities to take our money up front to pay for their risky plans?
Don’t let this happen in 2010! Please take the following actions:

    • Call the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) at 1-800-342-3552. Tell them to say NO to early cost recovery for new nuclear reactors in the 2010 Nuclear Cost Recovery Clause docket underway. Make sure to call soon as the PSC is set to vote on Progress and FPL’s tens of millions of dollars request on October 12, 2010.
    • Contact the Governor and your state legislators and tell them to repeal early cost recovery for new nuclear reactors and say NO to new nuclear power in any future renewable energy plan for Florida. We need more solar in the Sunshine State! And loads more energy efficiency and conservation, wind, and all things renewable!
